TEC College Goes Hands-On Experience with Virtual Instructor-Led Python Training Program

TEC College, Trichy, approached Digilabs with a request that’s becoming common among engineering colleges today: a certification program that does not just teach concepts on a slide but actually gets students coding, testing, and applying what they learn. Third-year students from 8 different departments needed to be trained in Python for Data Science, with an IBM certification at the end of it.

 

Rather than running a standard lecture-heavy bootcamp, Digilabs structured the entire program around a 60:40 split 60% Virtual Instructor-Led Training and 40% hands-on practice through Digilabs’ own Virtual IT Labs. The idea was simple: students learn a concept, then immediately get lab time to try it themselves, instead of waiting until the end of the day to attempt anything practical.

Our Challenge

With 183 students spread across AI&DS, CSE, AI&ML, EEE, ECE, Mechanical, Mechatronics, and Civil, the skill gap in the room was wide. Some students walked in already comfortable with Python. Others, especially from core branches like Mechanical and Civil, were seeing a coding environment for the first time. A pure lecture format would have left the beginners behind and bored the ones who already knew the basics.


The other challenge was time. Three days, 6 to 7 hours each, is a compressed window to cover Python fundamentals, data handling, and applied data science well enough for students to clear an IBM certification. Concepts needed to stick fast, which meant theory alone wasn’t going to be enough.

Our Approach

Digilabs built the program around a simple rhythm: teach, then practice, then teach again. For every concept covered in the Virtual Instructor-Led Training sessions, students were immediately routed into Digilabs’ Virtual IT Labs to apply it on Google Colab, working with real code and real datasets rather than just following along on a screen.

Day 1: Covered Python basics, syntax, and core data structures through Virtual Instructor-Led Training, with lab time built in right after each topic so students could test what they’d just learned instead of taking notes and moving on.

Day 2: Shifted into data handling and analysis, where the lab component became more central. Students spent close to half the day inside the Virtual IT Labs, cleaning datasets and working through analysis exercises on their own machines.

Day 3: Combined instructor-led revision of key concepts with extended lab time, giving students space to work through problems similar to what they’d face in the IBM certification assessment.

All 183 students completed the 3-day program and were certified under IBM’s Python for Data Science certification. Students from non-technical branches like Civil and Mechanical left with genuine, working Python skills not just theoretical exposure because the lab component forced them to practice rather than just watch. Students from CSE, AI&DS, and AI&ML used the labs to go deeper, applying concepts to more complex datasets during their practice time.
